Lansbury Heritage Hotel

Lansbury Heritage Hotel

Project Description

This stunning Grade II Listed Building, dating back to 1870 and designed in the High Victorian Gothic style, boasts a striking octagonal corner tower crowned with a finialed copper dome, formerly Poplar Town Hall. Transformed into a luxury hotel, the building now offers 37 distinctive bedrooms and suites, complemented by a restaurant, meeting rooms, and leisure facilities. Synthesis Architecture has seamlessly integrated original 19th-century details while modernizing all amenities to meet 21st-century standards and achieving BREEAM certification for sustainable design. This restoration revitalizes the building, opening its doors once again to the public.

Externally, the original poly-chromatic brickwork and ornate Portland stone detailing are meticulously cleaned and repaired, restoring the building’s grandeur. Energy-efficient LED lighting subtly illuminates the facade at night, enhancing its presence against the backdrop of Canary Wharf. Internally, the grand central staircase, illuminated by a large original Victorian roof-light, serves as the focal point, providing access to bedrooms dispersed throughout the building. Each room, featuring modern en-suite facilities with baths and showers, WiFi, 40” TVs, and remote-controlled lighting and air-conditioning, exudes individual charm.

Bedrooms on the ground and first floors retain original carved stone fireplaces and ornate coving under tall ceilings. Former boardrooms converted into double-height rooms offer lower-level desk spaces and mezzanine-level bedrooms with breathtaking views through 4-meter tall windows. Rooms nestled within the roof-space showcase the original timber roof structure, highlighted by glazed partitions and contemporary baths and furnishings that complement the historic architecture. The penthouse suite occupies the 11-meter high dome of the octagonal tower, featuring an original stone fireplace in the bedroom and a private bathing retreat at mezzanine level, accessed by a cantilevered oak and glass staircase. The suite also boasts a private roof terrace, offering panoramic views across East London’s rooftops.
